It would be easy to say that Death Metal in Japan originates, just as it did in the West, from bands like Possessed and Death. While this statement is not incorrect, it would overlook the many groups that, both in the West and in Japan, contributed to the gradual evolution that ultimately led to the emergence of the genre in the form we know today. Although not strictly Death Metal, several bands played a crucial role in igniting a passion for heavy music among a new generation of young listeners. Groups such as Casbah, Airraid, Jurassic Jade, United, Loudness and 666 stimulated the imagination of many teenagers of the time, encouraging them to take their first steps within the musical environment that would later give rise to the Japanese Death Metal. From this fertile ground emerged some of the earliest Japanese acts to approach the genre more directly. Bands like Criminal Christ, Multiplex, Necrophile, Blood Shower, and Abraxas—each working with different resources and approaches—helped lay the foundations for what would become a distinctive and fascinating scene. Instead, it evolved in unexpected and sometimes spectacular ways, developing unique nuances and characteristics. In certain cases, Japanese bands even created hybrid forms that transcended the genre’s conventions, eventually influencing the international scene themselves rather than merely following it. By breaking down the barriers of Metal’ sub-genres, they managed to draw attention well beyond the circle of Death Metal aficionados, eventually spreading their influence into the, once called, Alternative scene and, more broadly, into the most deranged fringes of Pop.
